In case you haven't seen it: pLog now called LifeType.

It was tough, but I would like to thank all of you who made this possible!

A bit of pLog...

18/09/2005 07:37 | Categories: LifeType | 0 Comments

Go check out pLog 1.0.2-beta, it's just been released! :)

Also pLog 1.1 is starting to look good... We've already managed to get it running with 4-5Mb of memory, instead of the 10-12Mb that pLog 1.0.x requires. I'm actually quite excited about these improvements, and users running busy hosting sites will also be quite excited about it! Imagine if every single HTTP request made to your site suddenly required 2-3 times less memory, wouldn't you be excited too? :)

Aaaah, I love popularity! pLog is becoming the tool of choice in Germany when setting up blogging services for journalists. First it was the Axel Springer group, and now it's Stern! It's really cool, they've even spoken to Michael and given him some feedback!

We really have to get our hands on doing some more aggressive marketing. These are really big achievements (two German and one Norwegian media powerhouses using pLog? Woohoo!) and I am sure that if instead of pLog they had chosen WP, half of the blogging "community" would be already having wet dreams... I am sure it's because our biggest "markets" so far are Europe and part of Asia and in the American blogosphere (70-80% of the total number of blogs) nobody cares about those.

We have to get into the American market and I think we're on the right track. If not, look at Classcaster.org: they got an Asterisk PBX hooked up to pLog so it is possible for their users to dial a phone number, talk for a while (up to 5 minutes) and the call will be automatically published to one of the blogs as a podcast. If I could give a prize for the "coolest pLog implementation ever", I would give it to them!! Check out their test blog, some people have already called :)

Biggest German publishing group using pLog

Thanks to the great work done by Michael promoting pLog in Germany, now the biggest German publishing group is using pLog for four of their blog sites. They're not communities but instead pLog is being used as a publishing tool for journalists. I am happier and happier everyday to see that pLog is being used in high-profile organizations like these ones. Hope we can get some more in the future and increase pLog's reputation as a great tool for publishing!

P.S.: Yes, we know about the performance problems that are giving some headaches to the admins of some community sites. But this publishing and journalism sites (like VG.net's blogs) do not display any kind of performance problems because they are sites where the content is mostly static all of the time, with only a few hundred comments every day so in those scenarios the template cache works beautifully. In any case, we are hoping to fix the scenario with busy sites in the next version.

pLog in my former school!

I have some really exciting news about pLog being used in some really big publishing companies, but I'll post about that later on :)

Today I foud in the referrers of plogworld.net that my school/university in Finland (EVTEK) has also recently installed pLog for their mobile laboratory unit. The second nice thing is that they're using the Atom plugin for the Lifeblog integration, and it seems to have worked well so far! And the last nice thing is that in the banner that they have on top of their page, you can see two of the German guys who were with me in the same group of exchange students, Bernd and Frank. I haven't heard from them for a while but it was funny to see them in the banner :)

I'm back

As you might have noticed by the article posted yesterday (I was just testing whether Lifeblog and the Atom plugin for plog works well in the new server), my blog is back :) I know it took a while but first I did not have ADSL at home and when I finally got the connection, it took a while until the new account was working well.

I am in a new server, so many thanks to Jordi for kindly allowing me to run my site here. Many thanks to Francesc too for allowing me to run this site so far in his account! Last but not least, many thanks to all of you (like Jon) who have offered me accounts in servers for my site! ;) The server so far feels quite good. It's quite fast, I can finally run a "modern" version of PHP and MySQL, and the DNS are also pointing to this new server correctly so no more redirects from renalias.net to francesc.net.

The new house also feels quite good, but there's still a lot of work to do. So far we've completed the dining area and the bedroom. The second bedroom, which will become the work room, is also ready but it has no furniture (looking forward to having a proper desk and a place to work properly again), and we have decided to get working on the corridor/entrance hall and living room as soon as we get back from holidays. We're too tired now :) Speaking of holidays, I'll be leaving in one week but expect updates from me in this blog via moblogging: first a week in Saint Petersburg, then a week in Lanzarote and then a week in my home town. I think this year I can't complain :)

Last but not least, pLog 1.1 is coming along... slowly. I'm determined to fix all the performance issues we're having with 1.0 but even though we've made some progress, I have hardly had 3-4 hours a week to work on it. This also means that my initial estimations for a final release (late Autumn or early Winter) could be wrong and that we won't see a pLog 1.1 until 2006. So you'll have to be patient.

SoylentX, another pLog community

20/06/2005 06:34 | Categories: LifeType | 0 Comments

I am proud to announce another pLog community: SoylentX. I really like the design and specially the way they've customized pLog... I understood it took them a great deal of time but the results are simply awesome. I love it, and I am really proud to see how almost every week I can post something here about a new community. After all our hard work, it's time to see the results!
