Partying and meeting cool people in Helsinki

Yesterday I was out and about partying in Helsinki and I had the chance to meet one of the guys who made the port of Python to Series60 possible. He is the guy who runs this blog. We were both quite happy (as in "drunk" :)) but I still couldn't resist to thank him and Nokia for releasing such a cool project :) However, I forgot to ask what are Nokia's long term plans regarding Python on Series60 and if they are going to be really committed to it... Next time I guess!

I also asked if they needed any help in the team but he also said that they're on tight budget so no luck this time :)

All you can do in Ruby and Python

PHP is not going anywhere anytime soon, but competition is getting tougher. Take a look at this article: Rolling with Ruby on Rails. It shows off the power of "Ruby on Rails" a very powerful MVC framework for creating web-based applications with database access. I really like the way the framework "discovers" the action classes, the controllers and how database access is implemented (for God's sake, it's only 2 lines!) And if you want to see more about Ruby on Rails, check out this video where the author shows how to create a simple blogging tool in 10 minutes. Impressive stuff!

I've already said that I'm really impressed by the things that can be achieved in Python and this new Ruby framework looks really really interesting. The more I work with PHP, the more I'm starting to miss a lot of concepts available in Python, Ruby or ObjectiveC+Cocoa (used in Mac OS X)

Looks like the time to move onto other projects is getting closer... We'll see!

Christmas and New Year's eve 2004 highlights

I have to admit that it wasn't that exciting. My home town was as dull as usual... Lots of food, family meetings, etc. Speaking of family meetings, my cousin gave a leason of how not to dress up when you have a family meeting with grandparents, uncles, etc:

Cool tshirt

The t-shirt is cool :), but that's probably not the best way to go and say hello to your grandma :)

New year's eve is always a busy time in Spain because everybody goes out... even more! If you don't believe me, take a look at how busy everything was around 1:30 in the morning:

Finally, there was a new inhabitant in my parent's place that I hadn't heard of: another dog (it's the second dog... plus the two cats :P) Cute if you ask me (some sort of cross between a Husky and Bulldog Terrier) but I see two problems: this dog eats a lot and it's going to grow quite big. Anyway, not my problem :)

Ecto test

Ecto is a desktop blogging client for OSX, that allows users to blog right from their desktop using XMLRPC APIs. It's quite cool, and I might even start using it... In fact, this has been posted from Ecto using the metaWeblog XMLRPC API and it works quite well :)

New design

It's about time, I was already tired of the old one :) This one is inspired on the new design of the new version of pLog's admin interface but that's ok, my designs are never originally mine :)

I've already managed to make it validate as XHTML 1.0 Transitional which is quite an important thing, specially beacause many people stop by my site to take a look at the whole pLog thingie and they usually go to the W3C Validator to make sure that pLog is generating valid XHTML markup.

I've also integrated some of my old pages in the blog and they are now all using the same look... Plus, the blog is now using gravatar-enabled. A gravatar is nothing more than the little icon that appears on the left of your name when you leave a comment. The only thing you need to do is sign up at gravatar.com and wait until the gravatar is rated. Once everything's ready, do not forget to leave your email address when posting a comment. The email address will never be shown but it will be used to fetch your gravatar. Obviously anybody could still impersonate you, me or anyone but at least the impersonation will now have a bit more style ;)

The blog should be more or less working except the search feature on the left. It's kind of broken but I haven't got time now to fix it. Don't worry, it will be back soon! And let me know if you find any other problem... (PS: the only thing I haven't done is to check the new layout in IE but who cares anyway, looks great in Firefox and Safari! :P)

Everything's f*cked up

I should know better about MySQL's doings with date fields... I run a little update in the database (permalinks were not working very well) and MySQL decided to update the date of all my posts to the 25th of December so everything's really messed up at the moment. But I did fix the problem with the permalinks and the images! :)

Anyway, in the meantime I will go and play with my Christmas present:
