As you might have noticed by the article posted yesterday (I was just testing whether Lifeblog and the Atom plugin for plog works well in the new server), my blog is back I know it took a while but first I did not have ADSL at home and when I finally got the connection, it took a while until the new account was working well.

I am in a new server, so many thanks to Jordi for kindly allowing me to run my site here. Many thanks to Francesc too for allowing me to run this site so far in his account! Last but not least, many thanks to all of you (like Jon) who have offered me accounts in servers for my site! The server so far feels quite good. It's quite fast, I can finally run a "modern" version of PHP and MySQL, and the DNS are also pointing to this new server correctly so no more redirects from renalias.net to francesc.net.

The new house also feels quite good, but there's still a lot of work to do. So far we've completed the dining area and the bedroom. The second bedroom, which will become the work room, is also ready but it has no furniture (looking forward to having a proper desk and a place to work properly again), and we have decided to get working on the corridor/entrance hall and living room as soon as we get back from holidays. We're too tired now Speaking of holidays, I'll be leaving in one week but expect updates from me in this blog via moblogging: first a week in Saint Petersburg, then a week in Lanzarote and then a week in my home town. I think this year I can't complain

Last but not least, pLog 1.1 is coming along... slowly. I'm determined to fix all the performance issues we're having with 1.0 but even though we've made some progress, I have hardly had 3-4 hours a week to work on it. This also means that my initial estimations for a final release (late Autumn or early Winter) could be wrong and that we won't see a pLog 1.1 until 2006. So you'll have to be patient.

I'm moving to a new server

This site will be moving shortly to a new server, since the agreement with this one is ending... I was running on a borrowed site and I will keep running on a borrowed one too, so that's not going to change I will be able to point my DNS to the new site so no more clumsy redirections from renalias.net to francesc.net, but I will have to see whether we can keep the old URLs working!

I haven't got ADSL at home to transfer everything yet and it could still take about 3 weeks or so to get the connection transferred (talk about efficiency! ) so it could be that after next Monday this site doesn't work anymore... Hope you all read this notice before that happens! But don't worry, I will be back

Our own house

After a few months of searching, we have finally bought our own house It's not too big (83m2) but it's in a very peaceful area somewhere south of Espoonkeskus called Latokaski, about 20km from Helsinki and less than 10km from our current office. It's a semi-detached house, it has 2 bedrooms, one big living room and dining area, and of course a sauna The house is in perfect shape (the kitchen is almost brand new while the bathroom and toilet were redone a couple of years ago), so this means that we will not have to spend much in it, just buy the furniture

We are going to sign the final agreement next week and we'll be able to move in on the 1st of July... At least we'll still have some summer left to enjoy the garden and sun!

Sometimes, there is no privacy in Finland

Last weekend I found out that if you send a message like this:

VERO NAME SURNAME CITY

To number 16400 (Zed's service number I think), you can get anybody's tax information from year 2003. Or in other words, your own private tax information is available to anyone knowing your name, city and willing to spend a bit over a Euro for the SMS. No wonder talking about salaries here in Finland is considered a taboo topic... anybody's salary information is only one SMS away! Considering how concerned people here are about privacy, I am surprised that this service even exists

I am not too happy about this. I need to find out whether I can remove my information from this service. I would have hoped that this was an "opt-in" service instead of an "opt-out" one.

PS: Yes, I've already used to find out the salaries of some of my colleagues...
