Linklogs

I have recently become quite addicted to some pages that work as "linklogs". In other words, they just collect links to interesting pages in the net... These are my favourite linklogs: All these links can be found at the bottom of the left column classified as "Linklogs". Enjoy :)

London

I was in London last week, participating in a course for my company. Since the course lasted from Thursday to Tuesday, I had to spend the weekend there. I went to do some sightseeing during the weekend and I took a few pictures (quite bad, by the way!) But take a look if you wish :)

Blog spam. How long until...?

25/12/2004 19:29 | Categories: Blogging | 0 Comments

In the previous incarnation of this blog, I already mentioned a few times the issue of blog spam (sorry, I'd offer permalinks but they were all sadly lost) Today I found about what to do to prevent spam, but I'd say the solution is rather extreme: switch off the commenting feature in your site... That's like saying, since the streets are dangerous, don't ever leave your place and in my opinion, that's not the right attitude.

The poster also recommends to leave the trackback feature enabled and I decided to leave a comment with a rather nasty idea... Trackback spam and how long it will take before spammers notice that it's way easier to automate trackback spam than comment spam. I am not a spammer and haven't even considered becoming one but the sooner we can become aware of our weak and vulnerable points, the better. The funny thing is that there are not so many solutions to prevent trackback spam either! I'll have to think about it ;)

Moblogging with a Nokia 7610 via Atom

25/12/2004 19:29 | Categories: Blogging | 0 Comments

I managed to get my hands on a loaned Nokia 7610 terminal, since I decided to join the beta-testing program of the Lifeblog tool, which will be provided for free by Nokia. The goog thing about Lifeblog is that it makes very very easy to take pictures with the camera and post them to your blog, all via Atom. Nokia also provided the beta-testers with a 3-month free account in TypePad, SixApart's blogging service based on MovableType. At the moment my plans are as follows: I have to help test this cute little tool (there's nothing like having your company pay your bills :)) but my bigger plans include developing an Atom layer for our beloved pLog, the tool that powers this site and many more out there (last version was downloaded over 8000 times!) For those of you interested, Atom is an XML-based protocol that uses the REST paradigm to build web-enabled applications. Sort of web service, but instead of only relying on POST requests, it uses all the request modes as provided by the HTTP specification: POST, GET, PUT and DELETE. There is lots more information in the Atom wiki and webpage so please take a look!
The target is to have everything ready before I leave to Spain in 2 weeks (it's about f*cking time I had holidays!) so that I can use Lifeblog from there to photoblog my holidays for all of you :) Atom is not a very easy API to implement but I'll do my best... I can't miss this chance now that I have a testing terminal, which I will only be enjoying until the end of August (as I said, it's just a loan :P)
My TypePad blog is http://oscar.typepad.com so during the first few days I'll be posting things there. I'm quite excited about moblogging, it might be the solution for people like me who still would like to share their thoughts (or pictures :)) with the rest of the world but do not have so much time to write! Stay tuned :)

Holidays!

25/12/2004 19:29 | Categories: General, Blogging, Fun | 2 Comments

I'm going to finally enjoy some holidays from tomorrow until the 15th of August (I'm expected back at the office on the 16th of August) It's only 2 weeks but it's better than nothing.

If you really need to know about me, please check my photoblog. I'll try to moblog my holidays :)

One week of holidays left

25/12/2004 19:29 | Categories: Blogging, Geeky | 0 Comments

And that's all. I was only allowed to take 2 weeks of holidays (even though I had been working for almost 9 months now in the same company) and now there is only one left. I'm back to my home town where I will meet some of my friends and try to have some fun and not suffer too much because of the heat here (compared to Finland, this is unbearable)

In the meantime, I'll also be working on the next version of pLog and as a result, I have updated the version used here to the latest development snapshot that includes amongst others, a working search feature (thanks Mark for getting it working :)), and some performance improvements. It is going to rock :)
